In Sri Lanka, protestors breached security barricades and entered president Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s and PM Ranil Wickremesinghe’s official residences, braving tear gas and water cannons forcing the president and the PM to leave their compounds. In dramatic scenes, protestors romped in the president’s swimming pool and helped themselves to food and drink, a reminder of the struggle to find basic goods as the country’s inflation rate surged to 70%. On Sunday, Parliament speaker Mahinda Abeywardena announced that president Rajapaksa will step down on Wednesday and discussions are underway to appoint a new PM before the resignation of the president.
