Over the weekend, Uzbeks voted in a constitutional referendum that could allow president Mirziyoev to hold power until 2040. The proposed changes, including the extension of the presidential term from 5 to 7 years, are widely expected to be endorsed by voters. Additionally, the referendum would “cancel” the president’s existing tenures, enabling him to serve two more terms, the legal limit. As of now, the results of the referendum are unknown.
