The World Bank has approved a USD 150 mln budget-support loan for Botswana to assist reforms toward economic resilience and a green energy transition. That follows a USD 250 mln budget-support disbursement in 2021, and the World Bank’s existing credit to Botswana is in direct project finance in the energy, transport, and water sectors. The recent loans represent a rare instance of policy-linked credit for Botswana, which traditionally avoided hard-currency debt, opting instead to use its diamond revenue-backed reserves.
