Guatemala

Amid rising tensions related to Guatemala’s June 25 presidential election, president Giammattei declared that he does not intend to extend his term. Court interventions have delayed the certification of the two presidential candidates selected to participate in an Aug. 20 runoff. This situation has sparked rumors that Giammattei, whose leadership has faced criticism for undermining democracy, might aim to retain power. Meanwhile, Guatemala’s annual inflation rate decreased to 4.93% YoY in June from 6.54% in May, while overseas remittances declined to 11.7% YoY in June, compared to 13.8% in May.
