Acute hunger has escalated fourfold in West Africa since 2019, a consequence of Nigeria’s battle against jihadists, coupled with military coups in Burkina Faso and Niger. An estimated 45 mln individuals are anticipated to face immediate life-threatening hunger levels, a spike from 10.7 million in 2019. The most severe hunger is in Nigeria, with 25 mln facing acute food scarcity, a significant rise from 5 mln in 2019. Burkina Faso has seen its numbers grow to 3.4 mln, Mali and Guinea have over 1.3 mln and 720k, respectively, and Niger’s numbers have soared to 3.3 mln.
