Colombia

Colombian president Petro expressed interest to revisit the FTA established with the US in 2012, citing negative impacts on Colombia’s production and job market and emphasizing that Colombia could create around 1.2 mln jobs if allowed to produce its corn instead of importing it, a restriction imposed by the current trade deal. While many South American countries have pivoted towards China for trade, the US remains Colombia’s primary trade partner, accounting for a fourth of its US 57 bln exports last year. In a recent visit to the White House, Petro appealed to president Biden for enhanced military support to combat cocaine trafficking.
