At the inaugural Africa Climate Summit, African leaders signed a declaration calling for debt relief and increased climate finance to boost electricity generation from renewable sources in Africa almost sixfold by 2030 and serve as the continent’s position at the upcoming COP28 in Dubai. The leaders seek an extension on sovereign loans, debt pauses during climate disasters, and a 10-year grace period on interest payments. Notably, the President of the AfDB said the bank has committed to providing USD 25 bln to fund Africa’s climate finance by 2050.
