Kazakhstan’s government has ordered oil majors at the Kashagan field to pay a USD 4.4 bln fine for sulfur pollution within 40 days, despite a recent court ruling that appeared to overturn the penalty. NCOC and its partners, including Eni, Shell, Exxon, and TotalEnergies, called the fine “unprecedented” and plan to appeal, arguing it violates both domestic and international law.
