Taliban’s powerful interior minister Sirajuddin Haqqani has lambasted for the first time the group’s reclusive spiritual leader for monopolizing power and damaging their government in Afghanistan. Haqqani’s comments indicate deep divisions emerging within the Taliban that seized power in the country in the wake of the US troops’ exit in 2021. Despite promises, Akhundzada’s, the supreme leader, edicts have rolled back all progress in women’s freedom over the last two decades. Women have been barred from public parks and gyms and forbidden to travel long distances without a male escort.
