Negotiations between Russia and India over using rupees for trade have been suspended, as Moscow is hesitant to hold the Indian currency, according to Reuters. This pause hinders Indian importers seeking cheaper Russian oil and coal, who anticipated a lasting rupee payment mechanism to reduce currency conversion costs. Last month, a previous currency disagreement halted Russian weapon deliveries to India, freezing over USD 2 bln in payments. The report noted that one contributing factor to countries not needing rupees is India’s 2% share of global goods exports.
