Pakistan

Pakistan is re-evaluating its power tariff structure following nationwide protests against increasing electricity bills. That comes as a first challenge for the newly installed Kakar administration. Any alteration in electricity pricing could jeopardize a USD 3 bln bailout package from the IMF that the country had previously secured. The situation is complicated by the 76% surge in the average electricity tariff within a year and a nearly 5% depreciation of the rupee against the USD in August.
