Violent confrontations between local Serbian protesters, police, and NATO-led peacekeepers in Northern Kosovo resulted in numerous injuries. About 25 soldiers from the KFOR were injured due to incendiary devices, and over 50 local Serbs were hurt, including one critically from gunshot wounds. These incidents occurred after Serbian protesters attempted to stop newly elected ethnic-Albanian mayors from taking office, jeopardizing an EU-brokered, US-backed plan to normalize Serbia-Kosovo relations. KFOR is encouraging both Serbia and Kosovo to engage in dialogue to alleviate tensions.
