Ukraine

The EC has criticized the unilateral plans of Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia to ban grain imports from Ukraine. On April 15th, Hungary joined Poland and Slovakia, which had already introduced a temporary ban on imports of Ukrainian grain. While Hungary ostensibly stated that the food products did not meet “European standards,” it appears that the measures were implemented to protect farmers from cheap Ukrainian grain. The EU has warned against unilateral trade actions, with a spokesperson for the bloc stating that individual member states cannot make trade-policy decisions.
