Uzbekistan’s elections, held yesterday, would likely extend Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s presidency as no significant opposition candidate stands against him. Since succeeding Islam Karimov after he died in 2016, Mirziyoyev has remained president. Following a constitutional referendum in April that reset his terms, Mirziyoyev called snap elections. The updated constitution lengthens the presidential term from five to seven years, potentially allowing Mirziyoyev to retain power until 2037.
