Botswana’s new president, Duma Boko, appointed Kenewendo as mines minister to help secure a deal with De Beers that aims to maximize the benefits from Botswana’s diamond resources. Under a 10-year agreement announced in July, the state-owned diamond trader will receive 30% of Debswana’s output, while the government will receive 10 bln pula (USD 729 mln) in development funding.
