Ghana

In a recent by-election, Ghana’s opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), maintained its seat, leading to a hung parliament. This situation could potentially obstruct the ruling New Patriotic Party’s efforts to pass necessary legislation to fulfill the conditions of a USD 3 bln IMF loan and present obstacles to president Nana Akufo-Addo’s plans to rejuvenate the economy and lower the debt-to-GDP ratio to 55% by 2028, down from 71.2% in 2022. The NDC and the ruling party now occupy 137 out of the 275 seats in the legislature, with the remaining seat held by a member leaning towards the New Patriotic Party.
