Kenya current-account deficit has narrowed from 5.6% of GDP in the previous year. The central bank’s February bulletin estimated the current account deficit to be 4.9% of GDP in 2022 and 5.2% in 2021, driven by the slow growth of imports and strong performance of exports of goods and services, as well as higher remittance inflows. Meanwhile, despite a police ban, Kenyan anti-government demonstrations are set to take place this week due to the high cost of living, with opposition leader Raila Odinga urging people to protest on Mondays and Thursdays. Protests last week turned violent and disrupted parts of the capital, Nairobi.
