According to the AfDB, Mozambique and Madagascar are poised to lead economic growth among Southern African nations in 2023 and 2024. While the region’s average growth is projected at 1.6% in 2023 and 2.7% in 2024, Mozambique is forecasted to grow 8.3% in 2024, buoyed by demand for liquefied natural gas and a TotalEnergies-led project resumption. Madagascar’s economy is forecast to accelerate to 5.0% in 2024, driven by a mining industry revival and higher nickel prices. However, South Africa is dragging down regional growth, with its GDP growth forecast to weaken to 0.2% in 2023 before rebounding to 1.5% in 2024.
