The World Bank warned that the number of poor Nigerians would reach 95mln in 2022, mainly due to double-digit inflation. The bank said “despite the urgency, the central bank’s response over the last two years has not been adequate, and inflation has fueled poverty and food insecurity”. The country’s annual inflation rate surged to 17.7% in June, exceeding the World Bank’s estimate of 15.5%.
