Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone’s capital is facing power outages after Turkey’s Karpowership halted its electricity supply due to an unpaid debt of about USD 40 mln. Energy Minister Sesay revealed that the debt accumulated over time as the government subsidizes over half the cost that Karpowership charges. The government has been paying in a weak local currency, the leone, which performs poorly against the USD. Officials mentioned that electricity tariffs might double.
