The Sudanese paramilitary group rejected a cease-fire as diplomats attempt to prevent fighting from escalating into a civil war. The capital, Khartoum, witnessed renewed clashes at dawn on Monday, which persisted throughout the day. The violence was particularly intense near the main international airport and army headquarters, along with the neighboring city of Omdurman. Hospitals in the capital were shelled by heavy artillery, resulting in at least 97 civilian deaths.
