Ugandan lawmakers plan to authorize a USD 518 mln loan from the IDA for urban development projects. The loan includes a USD 48 mln grant and an additional loan of USD 42.7 mln from the AFD. Notably, this loan is not affected by the World Bank’s recent decision to halt new loans to Uganda due to the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws. Existing loans valued at around USD 5.2 bln remain unaffected. Still, analysts warned that the move may deter FDIs and exacerbate economic inequality, hindering Uganda’s goal to become an upper-middle-income country by 2040.
